ART CLASSES AT CMoR!

Learn drawing, watercolor, clay techniques and more in this 45-minute art class offered every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. for 3-6 year olds with an accompanying adult.

June 5 Amate Bark Painting

Amate Bark Paintings are one of the many Latin American Folk Art traditions. Children will learn about the colorful paintings created on paper made from tree bark. Children will then produce their own version of the bark paintings using bright colored tempura paint outlined in black featuring animal and bird shapes.

June 12 Clay Dinosaurs

After examining CMoR’s very own large-scale dinosaurs, children will create three-dimensional dinosaurs out of clay. Children will learn how to roll clay and score and slip to attach pieces together. Children will be given the opportunity to glaze their dinosaurs at a later date.

June 19 Felting

Children will work with wool to create felt. No knitting, weaving, or crocheting is necessary. Instead, this age-old craft is created using basic techniques with no experience necessary.

June 26 Georgia O’Keefe Inspired Flowers

Children will learn about the famous artist Georgia O’Keefe and then paint and decorate large-scale flowers using a variety of mediums.

July 3 Wind Chimes

Children will create their very own wind chimes using beads, bells, and flowerpots. They will have an opportunity to decorate their chimes using acrylic paint.

July 10 Miniature Clay Animals

Using simple shapes children will create animals out of polymer clay. After sculpting lots of small shapes, children will assemble them together to create finished animals. The animals will be baked to become permanently hard and ready for pick up one week later.

July 17 Fun with Watercolor Techniques

Kids will paint a summer landscape as they learn and utilize various watercolor techniques explored through a variety of materials including crayons, masking tape, salt, and wavy stencils.

July 24 Fruit Art

Children will create a vase made out of paper. Then using cut fruit, toothpicks, and straws, children will decorate their vase with flowers and other ornamentation. Photos will be taken of finished works of art.

July 31 Introduction to Drawing

Children will learn about the 5 basic elements of shape while experimenting with varied styles and different types of media including pen, pencil, and felt-tipped markers. Children will keep all of their work in their own drawing book.

August 7 Paper Mâché Pots

Recycling and transforming old, used paper scraps into something new is fun and easy. Children will create a colorful pot from scraps of paper and will learn how to do it at home too.

August 14 Rainbow Frames

Children will learn about the properties of colors and sort objects according to their color. Then children will glue the color-sorted object piles onto their matte board frame.

August 21 Seed Mosaic

Children will learn about different types of mosaics and use dried seeds, beans, and other natural elements to create a textured mosaic. Varnish will be applied to the finished artwork.

August 28 Shiny Wall Banner

Learn how to reuse colorful and shiny wrappers and materials in a creative way to decorate your wall. Children will practice cutting using nylon netting material, buttons, flowers, and wrappers to create a banner for the wall.

September 4 – THE MUSEUM IS CLOSED FOR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE!

September 11 Self-Portraits

Children will make fun 3-D self-portraits that stand up on a table. Children will draw, paint, and collage on the cardboard cutouts to create expressive faces while learning about basic facial features.

September 18 Clay Gargoyles

Children will create animated faces using several clay techniques. The finished gargoyles will have a spout so water can flow through them. The fired gargoyles will be ready for pick-up two weeks later.

September 25 Wax Batik

Children will create authentic looking wax-resist paintings without the traditional heat and melted wax. Children will use watercolors and a special wax transfer sheet in an easy two-step process to achieve the finished product.

October 2 Nature Prints

Children will discover texture, pattern, and shape through two types of printmaking. Children will gather found objects in nature from CMoR> ‘> s own Backyard and create prints using sunlight and special print paper. Children will also practice using ink over found objects for finished prints.
