  • All programs are aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning, NAEYC, VA Foundation Block Standards.
  • Field Trip Programs are available September 15, 2008 – June 2009, Monday through Friday from 9:30-5:00.
  • All programs are $8.00 per person and are about an hour long.

Adapt in the Habitat (K through 2nd Grade)

Explore the fascinating world in which we live and its many different environments. Learn how animals adapt and thrive in these different environments and examine the food chain to determine who are the omnivores and carnivores.


American Indian Journey (1st through 3rd Grade)

Explore how American Indian Tribes (Powhatan, Pueblo, Sioux) adapted to different environments and made use of natural resources. Become a working tribe member and build a village, raise crops and make tools.


Blooming Butterflies (Pre-K through K)

Investigate pattern, shape and color while learning the lifecycle of a butterfly! Students’ creativity will bloom as they produce a beautiful nature-inspired work of art.


Circle of Friends (Pre-K through 3rd Grade)

Students will discover the rich, diverse celebrations of Richmond neighbors. Through hands-on activities students will develop insights into different cultures and their values, recognizing them as part of our community.


Creative Composers (Pre-K through K)

Create, listen and move! Students will be encouraged to let all of their creative juices flow and use music as a guide. A variety of art mediums will be teamed with creative movement, music and literature to inspire creative exploration.


Dinosaur Discovery (Pre-K through K)

Uncover clues from the past and learn how dinosaurs lived and what they looked like. Students can work like a paleontologist, take part in a dig, and classify their findings. Let learning and fun erupt with our volcano!


Down By the River (Pre-K through K)

Discover a diverse habitat that is special to the Richmond area and beyond: the James River! From fish to frogs, learn about many animals that call the river their home. Create a reminder of this special habitat to take home.


Drumsticks (Pre-K through K)

Children will enjoy an Asante tale from West Africa, The Leopard’s Drum. Students will participate in a drum circle exploring visual and auditory patterns. A special mask will be created for children to take home.


Dynamic Dinosaurs (1st through 3rd Grade)

Take a roaring journey back in time to discover the prehistoric world. What were dinosaurs? When did they live? What did they eat? How are these extinct life forms related to animals of today? Find out how we measure up to the dinosaurs!


Economics Express (K through 3rd Grade)

Needs vs. wants, goods and services, and consumers and producers. Practice economic principles by producing your own goods, bartering, exchanging money and role-playing.

Did you know Hopscotch is played all over the world? Come to the museum to ‘hop’ around the world starting from our own city block. Children will celebrate the diverse world we live in through play, literature, art, movement, reading and writing.


Magnificent Magnets (K through 3rd Grade)

Magnets are everywhere! Where do they come from? Investigate what makes magnets repel and attract. Work through an array of magnet experiments and activities that will really help the lesson ‘stick’.


Mapping Ancient Egypt (1st through 3rd Grade)

Work like an Egyptian! Explore the social, architectural and scientific contributions of ancient Egypt. Create a 3-D map using mapping skills and build a pyramid.

Students will apply mathematical thinking to create a work of art! Inspired by famous works of art mathematical concepts are highlighted and through hands-on activities introduce the fundamentals of multiplication.

How do we measure up in our world? Standard and nonstandard units of measure can be used all over the Museum in exciting hands-on ways to sharpen student’s math and geography skills.


Out of this World: Space Adventure (1st through 3rd Grade)

Work with science equipment that helps us learn about the solar system. Determine where the solar system is located in space and take part in interactive investigations of the Sun, the planets, and the moons.


Puppet Palooza (Pre-K through K)

Creativity and learning ‘come alive’! Children will experience a story through dramatic play with puppets. Various types of puppets will be introduced. Children will have an opportunity to create their very own puppet to take home.


Ready, Set…Grow! (Pre-K through 1st Grade)

What does it take to grow a garden? What tools do birds use to get their food? What are the ingredients needed to make things grow? We will make our own special blend of soil to take home and start our own little garden!


Simple Machines Made Tasty (K through 3rd Grade)

Give me a wedge, Give me a pulley, and Give me an inclined plane! Examine how simple machines help us in the kitchen and in our daily lives as build up a tasty treat!


Sinking and Floating Matters (Pre-K through 1st Grade)

Is it a sinker or a floater? Work like a scientist conducting various investigations, making predictions and forming conclusions to see what objects hit the bottom or stay on top.


What Senses I Have! (Pre-K through K)

I can see, I can hear, I can taste, I can touch and boy does that smell! Students learn about the five marvelous senses and which body parts are involved. Students will explore their senses through experiments and even create a “sense-ational” work of art to bring home.
